Feed Your Brain the Right Foods

Want to increase your brain power? Maybe if you feed your
brain the right foods, you can.

We all would like to think clearer without the confusion.
Imagine how productive and creative you can be if you could
think sharper.

Are you moody or depressed? Does your spirit need a boost?
Many things that enhance brain function will also increase
your spirit and improve your mood.

Besides physical and mental exercise, the foods we eat are
an important factor for brain health. The following tips
may help to improve your thinking and mood.

Studies do indicate that the diet has a role on our IQ.
Your brain's health not only depends on how much you eat
but what you eat. This goes for fat as well. There are good
and bad fats. Some of the better fats include olive oil and
fish oil that contains omega fatty acids.

Some foods that contain choline such as eggs may improve
alertness, memory, stress and fatigue.

Raw nuts and seeds supply essential fatty acids. Walnuts
especially are loaded with these healthy oils; others
include pumpkin seeds and flax seeds.

Seaweed and fish are great for their omega 3 content, but
you will have to watch out for their mercury content. Be
sure you know your supplier.

If you eat meat then go for the free-range and organic
variety. Nature does know best and the more natural the
better. There's no sense in consuming added hormones,
pesticides and unhealthy fats.

Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits as they are very
nutritious for you. Even if you eat healthy you may not be
getting all the nutrition you need. If that's the case then
a supplement may help.

The B vitamins are very important for top mental function
as well as lycopene found in tomatoes, vitamin-K in
broccoli and antioxidants in blueberries.

If you are overweight then this can also lower your IQ.
This makes sense. If your body is not fit then why would
your brain be?

There are things you can do to develop your brain. Exercise
is very important as well as how you feed your brain. You
may want to join a club, start a hobby or do something that
challenges your brain. Yes, your mind also needs to
exercise to keep it fit.

So think a little more before you pop those chips in your
mouth, grab a donut for breakfast or super size those
fries. Pop, excess sugar and refined foods are "dummy
makers" Stop eating dumb and eat smart.

What exactly are you feeding your brain?

"DIET" It's a Dirty Word

Lose the word "diet" from your vocabulary!

According to Miller Jones, a professor of nutrition and
food science at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul,
Minnesota...

4th graders are aware of the word diet, especially the
girls.

One of the world's largest study of weight loss has shown
that diets do not work for the vast majority of slimmers
and may even put lives at risk.

This type of yo-yo behavior is linked to many health
problems.  Because of the strain on the body of repeated
weight loss and weight gain, the researchers found that the
dieters would have been better off not dieting at all.

Research has shown the repeated rapid weight gain and loss
associated with dieting can double the risk of death from
heart disease, including heart attacks, and the risk of
premature death in general.

For starters...

When you think 'diet' you are actively engaging in short
term thinking.  When you start to think of it as something
you go on and then off again, that's the wrong direction.

Some of the BEST resources on nutrition are not diets.
They are eating plans.  They are how to eat healthy for
life programs.  They teach you how to eat correctly for
everyday living.  There's nothing short term about them.

"The benefits of dieting are simply too small and the
potential harms of dieting are too large for it to be
recommended as a safe and effective treatment for obesity."
-Dr Traci Mann

A quick test is to simply look at any given plan and
immediately ask yourself...

Is this something I can do for life?

Frankly...

If you are overweight, then thinking in the short term is
exactly why you could be doomed to fail!  As you bounce
from one plan to the next, you become more and more
frustrated.

FACT:  Many diets that use a severe calorie restriction
just makes it harder to lose the weight the next time.

FACT:  Some studies show that repeated weight loss and
regain actually increase the changes you'll gain even more
weight the next time.

FACT:  Studies consistently find that people who report the
most exercise also have the most weight loss.

Now with all this in mind...

No matter what eating plan you choose or what your goals,
just drop the word 'diet' from your vocabulary and pick a
plan you can stick with for life.  That encourages slow
weight loss or weight gain.  That doesn't "demonize" foods
but helps you pick and choose from healthy alternatives and
explains the reasons why.

If you are always changing your eating habits for special
events or every 8 weeks, you might be dieting.  That's the
time to take a step back and learn all you can about
nutrition.  Learning how to eat correctly is something you
can stick with for life and avoid the common frustrations.

Ready to Reset Your Body Weight?

The number one weight loss tip is one we all know. Eat
less, move more. It seems obvious, doesn't it?

All we have to do is stop over eating and just start
walking more. We can do something as simple as walking
around the block one time each day. This would only take
about ten minutes at most.

The real key is to just get in action. Is this your routine?

- Get in your car and drive to work

- Walk to your desk

- Sit at your desk for three to four hours.

- Walk to a place where you sit and eat

- Walk back to your desk and

- Sit for four more hours

- Walk to your car and sit in your car to get home

- Walk into your house.

- Sit down and eat and then

- Sit down and watch TV.

- Walk to your bed and sleep

- Repeat

The total amount of time you probably devote to walking in
this scenario is maybe about 60 minutes. Did you know 60
minutes of exercise can eliminate 600 calories when
applying some degree of intensity to it?

If you begin to use that same 60 minutes to walk fast and
energetically it may reduce the time walked down to 30
minutes but would be more beneficial time where you could
lose 300 calories per day doing that.

The calories needed to maintain your weight is a total of
your weight times ten. If you want to lose weight you need
to eat less calories than that number. When you have been
below your maintenance number of calories  long enough for
the difference to total 3500, you will lose one pound.

By knowing this, you can get control over your weight once
you become serious about it and commit to a weight loss
program that gives you the nutrition you need while doing
so at a minimal caloric intake.

Resisting Weight Loss.

What makes you resist moving?  Human nature is to stay in
our comfort zones as much as possible.  When the comfort
zone is to sit in a chair, we resist doing anything else.
On the other hand, if your comfort zone were to be outside
walking here walking there, enjoying the weather your would
be uncomfortable sitting in a chair.

Arrange your life so moving around is a natural part of
your life.  Get involved with a diet program where you can
eat when you are hungry and still experience weight loss.
